Cleveland Pools

Client: Cleveland Pools
Sector: Heritage, Leisure
Service: Programme and Project Management
Value: £9M

This £9M community-based project involved restoring a Grade II* listed, outdoor, Georgian era swimming pool back to its functional state. The pools were once a popular attraction to locals and tourists but closed in 1984. Cleveland Pools is Britain’s Oldest Lido, located close to the centre of Bath, which itself is a UNESCO world heritage site. The site is owned by Cleveland Pools Trust (CPT), which was formed in 2003 to rescue the pools from dilapidation.

The project involved the development of a new crescent shaped main pool that matched the original footprint of the existing pool, refurbishment of the children’s pool, development of new drainage and filtration systems, installation of hi-specification water sourced heat pumps, creation of a refreshment kiosk and plant room, new showering facilities, and visitor seating areas. In addition, the existing Georgian changing rooms and on-site cottage were made structurally safe and restored. The project also involved extensive landscaping to bring this derelict heritage site back to its former self and to create an aesthetically pleasing environment to visitors.

The refurbishment was partially funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund due to the positive impact its restoration would have on the local community in Bath. One of the key funding criteria is that public consultations within schools and local activity groups has had to take place to ensure the pool provides the facilities and activities required by the local community. It has also been funded by Historic England and Salix.

Provelio undertook project management for the full duration of this project, which was completed in late 2022. Provelio have brought a hands-on approach to support the charity in the development of the logistics planning and design management.
