Provelio are appointed as Project Managers to deliver a new regional Orthopaedics Centre for Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The aim of the
Learning and Research Centre
The Learning and Research Building at Southmead Hospital provides training, teaching accommodation and research laboratories. The extension project aimed to provide additional space for the relocation of research functions that had a close relationship to the services within the existing building, improving the efficiency of these services. Additionally, a number of modifications had to be carried out to the existing building without disrupting ongoing operations.
The new building provided 3500 square metres of high specification teaching and research space, including seminar rooms, IT rooms, research labs, offices and a library.
Provelio were appointed as technical project managers to take the scheme into tender and through construction. Our appointment included a rapid review of the design information and the reappointment of an architect so that the scheme could be further developed to a point where it could be robustly tendered as a Design and Build contract. Provelio managed the overall programme and achieved completion of Stage 4 (Construction) one month in advance of the Trust’s deadline to be handed over as Phase 2 of the PFI hospital project.
This project presented technical, organisational and logistical challenges. The building extension had to be incorporated seamless into the existing and many spaces at the building junction had to be remodelled and refurbished so that the final building worked as a single building and not two halves. The project also incorporated multiple stakeholders included multiple user groups, such as staff from the University of Bristol, Bristol Urological Institute, Regional Quality Control Laboratory, and NBT Academic Services.
The team proactively managed the disruption caused in the existing teaching and research building while being significantly extended. This required proactive engagement and communication throughout the process ensuring all stakeholders were aware of the works and the predicted impact on operations this would have. This was achieved successfully, with the team even managing to extend a live library with minimal disruption.
