The installation of a new Geo-Exchange Heating System at the University’s Gipsy Lane site in Headington. This new system has replaced the fossil fuel solution that was previously used and will provide approximately 1.2GW of heating per year.

Two new heat pumps have been integrated within the universities existing systems and are utilising energy from 14 boreholes that extract and store energy in the ground. The aim of the project was to support the Universities goals in reaching net zero carbon. It is anticipated to reduce the carbon emissions produced by the campus by 20%. Oxford Brookes University became the first UK university to integrate this type of system.

The project was funded by a £2.3M Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) grant from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
