Neonatal and Obstestrics Department (Glangwili Hospital)

Sector: Health
Service: Programme and Project Management
Value: £25M

Provelio were appointed as Project Managers for the refurbishment and extension of the Neonatal and Obstetrics department at Glangwili Hospital, on behalf of the Hywel Dda Local Health Board. The development included the construction of an elevated first floor extension with 8 new delivery suites, two new neonatal theatres, a new NICU and general wards and supporting accommodation, which allowed a decant from an adjacent block to take place. Once completed, an alteration and refurbishment occurred to construct an additional storey. External improvements included another 59 car parking bays, which were added onto the new car parking bays constructed as part of the Scheme 1 works.

Provelio were appointed as Project Managers from RIBA Stage 0 – 7, which included managing the project through OBC, FBC and into delivery and completion. The PSCP was procured through the Welsh Government Design 4 Life framework under an NEC Option C contract. Alongside managing the refurbishment and extension, this project also required a significant move management element to relocate clinical staff, operating theatres, offices and staff through the multiple phases of delivery, as well as complex stakeholder management.

The project presented major challenges as the new build element was above and connecting to the existing hospital. All construction undertaken had to have minimal disruption to the operational side of the hospital departments. To address this challenge, the construction stage was delivered through a multi-phase approach with separate decant phases between each construction phase. There were six main phases in this project delivery, which allowed areas to be built and refurbished. In one phase the entire existing maternity building was re-clad and re-roofed while maintaining services inside.
