Provelio were appointed as Project Managers for the refurbishment and extension of the University’s existing multistorey sports offering on Highfield Campus.
The new and improved facility has greatly improved the university’s sports and fitness offerings. It now provides users an enhanced space filled with different activities. The extension to the facility has meant that the new facility includes 4 multi-use sports studios (with capacity for virtual classes), a dedicated martial arts space, an indoor cycling studio, a modernised gym with over 100 Technogym equipment stations, 3 squash courts, a rock-climbing wall and new café and terrace seating area.
The project involved the demolition of existing properties surrounding the site, including an existing medical centre. Extensive stakeholder engagement was undertaken to ensure that the students and local community were not impacted by the proposed changes to the locality of services. A key requirement of the project was to ensure that the existing sports offering remained fully operational during the construction of the extension.
The multi-storey site is also bordered by ornamental gardens which are of ecological and botanical interest. Therefore, the drainage strategy for the Jubilee Sports Centre was to discharge surface water into the water course (within the gardens) rather than using a public piped network to alleviate capacity issues. This required circa 600m3 of attenuated and online storage.
