MRC Institute for Health Informatics

The MRC Institute for Health Informatics project was a 5824m² new build for the School of Medicine at Swansea University and the NHS. It is an iconic building intended to house research academics and NHS staff, creating a creative hub for research and innovation. The design brief was for an architecturally impressive building that makes the most of the available views, and internally provides a stimulating place to work. Funding for the project was received from the Medical Research Council and Welsh Government. Provelio were appointed to oversee the demolition of an old office building and to complete the detailed design stage and provide project management services through tender, contract award and construction stages.

The aging building that required demolition contained a large amount of asbestos therefore management of asbestos surveys and careful containment during the demolition process was required. It was important to the client that the ongoing function of the university was not impacted for the duration of this project. To minimise this, we examined all possible works that could affect other building users and worked closely with the contractor to plan the least disruptive method of delivery. Sustainability was another key consideration for the project, with the final build achieving BREEAM Excellent.
