Dyson Hangar Refurbishment

Client: Dyson
Sector: Commercial
Service: Programme and Project Management
Value: £12M

Originally an airfield built in 1937, Dyson acquired this space to create the Hullavington Campus in response to the growing demand at their nearby Malmesbury Campus. The restoration worth £200M transformed the land and hangars into a new Dyson Technology Campus. It is home to Dysons Research and Development (R&D) centre for the electric automotive division.

Provelio were involved in the refurbishment of two hangers, 180 and 181. The aim was to carefully restore and internally transform the hangars to provide workspaces that would be suitable for the new purpose of the development. These refurbishments would turn the hangars into a new automative and research development facility, and a battery research and development facility. The new facilities provided Dyson with additional workshops, research and development laboratories, welfare and kitchen facilities, waste and storage areas and staff office space.

The Hullavington Campus was known as one of the surviving examples of RAF architecture post-1934, therefore it was imperative that the hangars maintained as much original architecture as possible. The restoration of the hangars was seen as a critical element of the development, which meant exceptional levels of care were undertaken throughout the process.
Additional works included internal works and roof works. The project included the commissioning and installation of highly specialist equipment, including a climatic chamber, a rolling road and engineering laboratories.
