The first duty of a Project Manager
The first duty of a project manager is to ensure that the project is conducted in a way that delivers the Client’s objectives in full.
Building a team
There can be no better starting point that to ensure that the project is staffed by people and organisations with relevant skills and experience to execute the project competently and professionally. This means that in addition to knowing precisely what needs to be done on the project, the project manager must be able to define roles and responsibilities and select members of a team that can deliver the tasks.
The selection process is therefore not limited to having an intelligent appreciation of technical skills. It also means being acutely aware of the attitudes of individuals, the culture of organisations and the “chemistry” between them.
Naturally, the project manager needs to organise people, issue instructions, support them, monitor their performance and encourage them to take timely action throughout a project. All of this is much easier if there are good relationships, which are based on mutual respect. Motivation is a vital part of managing a project.
To motivate people, the Project Manager must set the right tone for the project so that people are focused on getting results for the Client and do not feel the need to be defensive. Every project succeeds when it has everybody pulling in the same direction and able to see the “big picture”.
Everybody likes to be part of a winning team and both success and enthusiasm are contagious.
But motivation is not enough. It is important to add a sense of direction, which creates certainty and energy in the project. This is why Leadership is the most important attribute of a Project Manager. This does not absolve the Project Manager from learning the standard, technical skills and processes of project management, but it does mean that without Leadership, these technical skills are not enough.
It is Leadership that galvanizes a team to perform at its best and deliver the best possible project for the Client.
